“I used to believe… that growing and growing up are analogous, that both are inevitable and uncontrollable processes. Now it seems to me that growing up is governed by the will, that one can choose to become an adult, but only at given moments. These moments come along fairly infrequently – during crises in relationships, for example, or when one has been given the chance to start afresh somewhere – and one can ignore them or seize them.” — Nick Hornby

At the moment, I’m seizing the moment. It isn’t graceful, but I’m happy for having the choice.

What choices are you making? What moments are you seizing today? Do tell!

  1. Today and every waking moments of my life I do my best to be aware of what is before me. What happens at the present moment will never be repeated again, and so I need to cherish it. :-)

    • Walter: Awareness is so important, and near impossible for me when the alarm is going off. I need at least an hour for any awareness to be lasting! ;)

  2. Great quote. I go through the cycle of being productive and then watching it all go away. Right now I’m in the productive part, so I’m just riding it for as long as I can. The cold will be here soon enough, so I’m trying to spend as much time outside as possible!

    • Molly: I think pretty much everything Nick Hornby utters is quotable. I’m jealous of his way with words! On my “Adore!” list, for sure.

  3. Emma, what an amazing quote. I’ve recently been feeling these ‘moments of adulthood’, and they catch me by surprise. I remember saying to myself, during the last one, “I really want to be an adult.” It sounded funny to hear it, because I’m 54… And, it felt so good, like a natural thing, you know?
Thanks for the great reminder that I’m normal…or something along those lines.

    • Julie: Actually, it’s incredibly reassuring to hear that you have those moments too. :)
