For the past few months, I’ve been back in an office job, the kind that comes with cubicles, florescent lighting and gossiping co-workers. Yes, it has been a fairly soul crushing experience.
If only money grew on trees.
Or came more frequently and fluidly from the activities I do which feed my soul.*
It’s the gossip that bothers me the most. The tense whispers. The snickers. The HOURS of inane conversation about this or that person. It isn’t all negative, per se. But it is just SO MUCH CLUTTER.
I already have PLENTY of clutter, folks!
Debating for 45 minutes the size of a belt buckle some dude wore on a reality show does NOT improve my life.
Pointing out the flaws of those with whom we sat in a meeting does NOT improve my life.
Clearly, it entertains many people. Perhaps, I am simply too self-centered to understand its merits. All I know is, it exhausts me to overhear it, it bores me to engage in it, and it has the stickiness of oil on a feather.
Now, if someone wants to talk about the tragedy of oil on feathers, I will gladly engage. Unfortunately, that does not seem to be a topic of interest for the office gossip girls.
What’s your take on a little gossip?

*Never fear. I am, indeed, working on this being more than an “if only,” with the help of Chris and Danielle and all of you. But it’s all happening at an annoyingly GLACIAL pace!

/ May 27, 2010ooooooooh, I hear you, em — blech! I wonder (who wants to create the poll? grin) whether 7/10ths of the folks engaged in the boring water cooler gossipy crap are feeling the yuck themselves, but thinking that pretending to go with it might help them fit in?? Or (ohNOOOOOOOO) whether many people really DO enjoy that type of thing????
Talk that’s totally dry and blech and pointless like that makes me feel like I’m shrinking — it’s visceral (but not shrinking in a diet sort of way – or we’d have a great money maker on our hands!!).
Here’s hoping you find someone in that office (while you’re there working on your empire!!) who’s full of the kind of bouquet-joy (thinking of the post before this one) that YOU are! Big hug!!!

Finding people with whom you click – that’s the key, really, in any environment, isn’t it?

/ May 27, 2010oh man, i don’t miss being in an office or cubicle! that being said…i do miss some of the chatter, even if it’s mindless sometimes…helps me get out of my head. not that i’m much of a gossip girl, myself…i’m like it & the lovely square peg karen up there, it bores me, usually. but only if i don’t know or care what they’re talking about. sometimes it’s just nice to share a sense of camaraderie with people you wouldn’t normally have anything in common with.
*and i push my way into your hug & make it a group hug
