In Praise of Veggies

by Jean Baptiste Mondino

It has been raining for 40 days and 40 nights 6 days straight, so you will now have front seats to my complete unravelling. First, I start staring out the window in mid-conversation and try to count how many raindrops have hit the pavement. Then, I sink into the couch and engage in lengthy discourse with my cat. If the sun hasn’t made an appearance by then, my brain casts itself as a whirling Dervish and I am overcome by an urge to cut things up into little pieces. It is moments like this when I praise the farmers of the world for providing me bountiful heads of lettuce, brussel sprouts and zucchini. I drift into my kitchen and I begin chopping.

Blades THUNK into wood.

Green bits ferociously FLY.

My cat HIDES under the bed.

So therapeutic.

And I’m left with a finely minced vegetable medley. Nothing wrong with that.

What do you do to stave off the straight-jacket?

p.s. Check out Jean Baptiste Mondino’s work. Aside from the shot above, Slim Ladies No. 1 is my favorite of his photos.

  1. Unfortunately, I shop… Fun, but not so good for my bank account. Maybe I should start chopping veggies…..

Jennifer: Oh, I’ve done the shopping thing, too. But not when it rains. Then, I don’t leave the house so it’s all about the chopping. I definitely recommend trying it. VERY satisfying!

What perfect timing! I just CHOPPED yesterday.

Went to the grocery in the rain, craving veggies! Excessive rain and wind and gray drives me kooky. Yesterday it was broccoli, cauliflower, onions, mushrooms & baby bok choy~

Love this post, thanks for sending a smile to rainy Phoenix!

  3. Oh, Em – that much rain drives me to the brink – gotta see some sun or I can’t “stave off the straight-jacket”. Although those onions Bonnie mentioned — with the tears you mentioned – that’s good. Sometimes I will break down in tears after too many rain days – and then (sometimes) I’ll feel some relief. But mostly – just bring on the dem sun!
Hope you get a few dry days REAL soon!
Love the photos and glad you’ve got your chopping block – sounds like a good way to burn off some arghhhhhhhhh!

Yi Shun: I stick everything but the lettuce in a skillet to cook and char a bit. Then I toss them with the lettuce and maybe add some protein. Makes for a great salad-ish feast. Try it! And, btw, welcome to PN! :)
