Look Up

I really like stars, the ones in the sky. Living in LA, its easy to get confused though. We so rarely see those little suns. And many people around here get distracted by the kinds of stars that insist upon eating over-priced salads at The Ivy and create cable series to document their bowel movements or whatnot. But the “twinkle, twinkle” kind are absolutely magical. So, it is a shame that I love sleep even more than I like stars. Otherwise, I’d drive out to the desert tonight, or someplace where city lights and smog don’t make the night sky resemble a sloppy collection of mud pies. Why? Because there’s an awesome meteor shower under way.

Ok. Technically a meteor shower has nothing to do with stars. But there’s a reason I’m not a scientist. I leave technicalities to my Harvard PhD suffixed brother, who is one. All I know is that the Perseid meteor shower, which is basically created by a comet’s junk trail, is making things really pretty above us.

If only the best time to see this natural phenomenon wasn’t the wee hours. I’ll have to make do with sweet dreams. I will not be listening to “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” to put me to sleep, however. Or at least not the version, from Manoj Kumar’s Purab Aur Paschim, below. It does have a strange hypnotizing effect on me, but that may not be intentional.

Oh, and if you catch a glimpse of the shower, let me know!

  1. I have never seen a meteor shower and don’t know if I could here in DC…something to research.

  2. I love stars, too. And I love the sky and clouds. I really really want to see the Northern LIghts sometime in my life. I think it would be magical.

  3. Emma, speaking of stars, come on by my blog and check out your Bloggy Award.

  4. Lem: I think it calls for a road trip with your gals to some less inhabited region. I’ve heard you’ve got some hills out there…
