One-Two Punch

I’ve never been a particular fan of boxing, though I do think that Joe Calzaghe dude is kinda cute, with the Welsh accent and all. I have a new appreciation, however, for the one-two punch. I’ve been flattened by a cosmic one-two punch for the past few weeks – the death of my dear friend, Jamie, followed quickly by the death of my grandfather.

I’m slowly climbing back onto my feet, my vision is becoming less blurry and I’m finding my voice again. I’m starting to breathe more deeply, laugh at funny jokes as well as morbid ones and get irritated by minutiae.

The grief isn’t gone, by any means.

I won’t deny that there is a part of me that is waiting for the next shoe to drop, that hears the litany of “these things come in threes” reverberating in the ether, that is overcome with sadness in random moments. I secretly grope with ridiculous notions that I can make some logical sense of the past month or, alternately, that it all will be revealed to have been some sick joke. I take comfort in the fact that I am not alone in dealing with the bizarreness of death.

Pleasure Notes was created so that I could focus on the things that bring me pleasure, spend more time looking through rose-colored glasses and see the cup of life as half-full rather than half-empty. There is nothing pleasurable about grief, death makes the world far too dark to justify glasses of any kind and the loss of loved ones shatters even a Lucite cup. So, returning to this space – Pleasure Notes – is a bit of a challenge at the moment. It is also crucial.

Jamie Leigh Dyer Dordek and John Arthur Read were both amazing people who led extraordinary lives, embraced the wonders of the world and shared who they were with those whose paths they crossed. I can only hope that someone thinks the same of me when my time is up. Fulfilling that hope requires dusting myself off and jumping back in the ring.

I will begin by drawing your attention back to that Joe Calzaghe dude, because…

Well, really, what better way to acknowledge life’s awesomeness than to admire a hot, half-naked man?

  4. Emma,
I am sorry to hear of the turmoil in your life as late. Death is never an easy part of life. It is a part of life, a transition we all face. It reminds us of that which is precious and pleasureful.

Just remember that as long as you honor your friend and grandfather in your thoughts and life, they are never truly dead. Thank you for sharing a bit of them with us and welcome back.

  6. JP: Thanks, babe! One of these days I’ll put up a half-naked lady just for you.

VBCat: I’m so sorry you too have had to deal with loss this year. My heart goes out to you. And I can’t believe I didn’t think of the wound licking myself. Sounds like the perfect medicine.

Molly: I knew you would! ;)

C&S: Thank you for the reminder and the sentiments. I can only move forward.

Ab: Um, that’s his undies. But I’m okay with it, either way. :) And welcome to Pleasure Notes!
