Sometimes I forget that, while we all have our unique quirks, we are not so very different, one from another. We all want to feel safe, loved and happy. We’re all just doing the best we can. Now, I’m not going to pretend that, on occasion, “best” doesn’t kinda suck ass. It does. In my opinion. But what is my opinion, really? Basically, it is a value judgement.
That’s where things can get wonky.
The problem, you see, is that my opinions are really good at disguising themselves as facts in my brain. I start to think that I know best… about anything everything, really. Then, my ego gets involved, and it’s all downhill from there.
If, on the other hand, I remember that I am one of many, and that we’re all striving to achieve the same fundamental goals, I am much less likely to feel the need to pass judgement, on you or myself. My opinions remain in hibernation. I refrain from expressing road rage, questioning your parenting techniques or determining that the majority of people in the world are idiots.
I might even smile and consider it a pleasure to meet you. All because I, you, we, them, and those guys are just one of many. How’s that for profound?

/ July 14, 2009I’d have to say not judging is one of the hardest things to do, but I try not to all the time. I just think — you really have no idea what is going on in that person’s life. But it takes a lot of effort to keep that up!!
