Pleasure Finds Friday: Toiletry Bag

Also known as a sponge bag or a dopp kit, the toiletry bag is a necessary accessory for any travel minded person. Why not get a super chic one, like those designed by Ingela Hakansson? Even in an era when TSA agents still require that we put all our secrets in ziplock baggies so they can judge our brand choices as we trudge through airport security checks, a more substantial receptacle for sundries should not be abandoned. It makes life easier and more organized, in a good way. There are only three requirements it must meet:
  1. Waterproofness.
  2. Sturdy closures.
  3. Sufficient room to fit everything it must hold.
The toiletry bag does not have to be appealing. Just like you don’t have to wash your hair.

For the same reason that your mother told you to always wear cute underwear when traveling, though, you really should have a fashionable toiletry bag. It can save you some unnecessary embarrassment, and might even land you a date with that attractive person you’re silently hoping is seated across the aisle from you.

You may be wondering why I care about travel aesthetics. Well… As you read this post, I’m on my way to the United Kingdom, or I may already be there. For the past few weeks – yes, weeks – I have been obsessed with packing. I haven’t actually done any packing, mind you, but I have been pulling everything out of my closets and drawers in preparation. And I discovered that my toiletry bags are tired and downtrodden tramps. They are stained and torn from years of hoofing it. They need to be retired. So. I went looking for an upgrade.

These delightful, oilcloth toiletry bags immediately caught my eye. I love their in-your-faces, abstract patterns and bold colors. They capture the excitement and energy I always associate with travel, overseas travel in particular. I haven’t gotten one yet, but I’ve put my old toiletry bags on notice.

I’ve selected my favorite designs, though Ingela Hakansson has created many more. Which one do you like best? And, seriously, what does your toiletry bag look like? Has it seen better days?

Price (based on my budget): Moderate. Available at Scandinavian Grace.

For the next week, I’ll be trying to drive on the “wrong” side of the road without killing a sheep. I promise to relate all my adventures to you when I get back. While I’m gone, some fabulous blogging friends are going to chip in here. I’ll let their identities be a surprise. Please help them feel welcome.

  1. you know, I’m a compulsive pre-trip shopper (any duration of a trip – if I’m sleeping in a hotel, then it’s a trip). I’ve done everything from clothes to shoes, to makeup to new shampoo. I can’t say I’ve ever felt the need for a new toiletry bag…until now, that is. Damn you ;-)

    Have fun in the UK!

  2. Kat: Me too! And I’m a sucker for all those mini toiletries. Hope I didn’t exacerbate the compulsion too much ;)
