Blooming Monday has always been about fresh cut flowers in the home because I feel so strongly that everyone should surround themselves with bouquets of pleasure. However, I cannot ignore the abundance of blooms over which I keep stumbling on various saunters around various towns lately so I’ve decided to celebrate blooming gardens for the summer months.

I came upon this tree, in the front yard of a stranger’s house. It was festooned with a multitude of cages both practical and surreal. It had a mate as well, bedecked with even more birdhouses. I heard no chirps from happy inhabitants but I was not dismayed. I don’t think that’s the point.

I’ve been visiting family in Colorado. There is less oxygen there. And less noise. And less distraction. And less occasion to be wired, or wireless. I love it.

Yesterday was tough. I had a migraine. I was procrastinating about accomplishing a string of little tasks, none of which would change the world. I was sore from an exercise class the previous night and feeling very creaky. I finally forced myself away from my desk near the end of the day and took a short walk.

And, in one random moment, I looked up.

I have a snail obsession, I confess.

They cover the tops of bushes early in the day, catching the night’s dew drops before the sun has its way.

Then, they defy their reputation for sluggishness by disappearing from sight by mid-morning.

I don’t know what I would do if one day they were gone…

Perhaps order escargot for lunch?

This is just an unnamed Southern California beach and sliver of sunset, captured at dusk on a Sunday from the upper deck of a train speeding home.

Beautiful. Wistful. Too brief.
