I’ve had a frustrating week. I’m job hunting and not only am I not finding what I want, I’m not even finding what I don’t want. But getting bogged down by depression, fear, resentment, or discouragement will only prolong the process. Instead, I’ve decided to focus on what makes me happy. Wanna join in the fun?
Can you think of three daily activities that consistently bring you joy?
What surprises me most as I addressed this question for myself is that I’ve come up with more than three things almost immediately. For the purposes of the exercise, I’ve adhered to the three item limit, but it’s incredibly reassuring to know that I have the luxury of CHOICE in deciding what to identify that consistently puts a smile on my face.
- Meditating with my cat.
- Steeping my morning cup of tea.
- Slipping into my pjs at the end of the day.
Three simple, daily activities that I ALWAYS enjoy. They help me remember that no matter how frustrated I am with how any given day is going, it is NEVER all bad.
So, what are three things that daily bring you joy?

/ January 29, 2010Emma – Hang in there! Sending you a ray of sunshine!!
Here are my three things that immediately popped into my head:
1) First sip of coffee in the morning
2) My morning potty (I’m just being honest here!)
3) Those few seconds of calm right before falling asleep.

/ January 29, 2010love love LOVE where you’re looking in the face of frustration!
1. looking in the eyes of my puppy and seeing love and mischief all in the same sparkle
2. realizing that I live 2 blocks from the beach and can go to there anytime I want!
3. waking up a real live homeowner every day
Like you I found more than 3…what a blessing to know we have so much joy to choose from =)

/ January 29, 2010Dian: Aw, I love puppies. And yes, it really is awesome to remember how much there is that makes me happy, and how simply it is achieved. So glad you get that too.

/ January 29, 2010such a good idea, this. my 3 things (in no particular order):
1. hearing from my children every single day about what’s going on in their lives.
2. lotioning up my body, sliding in between the cool sheets, and reading myself to sleep.
3. seeing your name pop up in my tweets or emailbox.

/ January 31, 2010I agree with Jeanne. Great idea for a post! My three things:
1.) Getting into bed, knowing that I have hours to go before I have to get up.
2.) Sitting down on the couch with my husband and our two cats to watch tv or talk after a long day of work.
3.) Driving down highway 101 on the central coast of california, looking to my left or right an seeing the ocean.

/ February 2, 2010Jennifer: Thanks so much, and welcome to PN. And I couldn’t agree more that driving down the highway and seeing the ocean is a joy-booster at any time. I may just mysteriously end up on the PCH today, just because.

/ February 2, 2010I really liked this post, though I had a hard time coming up with three of my own, which made me think harder, which in turn really made me like this post, so thank you!
1) I really like the smile of recognition I get from my neighborhood barista. I really like being a local.
2) I really like comment notifications in my inbox, maybe I’m shallow, but I still get a huge kick out of comments, positive or otherwise because it means at the very least people are reading.
3) I really like getting on the train in the morning, because its so random, you never know who you’re going to see or run into or fall in love with, the train rocks.

/ February 2, 2010Sean: So glad you liked this, and that you really thought about your 3 things! They’re great and I agree with all of them, though I haven’t been on a train in a very long time. Being a local at a neighborhood cafe is fantastic; I get a rush every time the baristas greet me by name and know my order. Nothing better than being part of a community. And I LOVE comments too. Thank you for leaving yours, and for visiting PN. Welcome!
